Over the past few years, we’ve established our new year tradition. On January 1st, Masa prepares some Japanese dishes to celebrate the New Year. We celebrated our last new year (2012) in Japan with my parents-in-law and Masa’s brother. I saw how my mother-in-law spent days to prepare for the first meal in the new year. Our version is much simplified. For this year, Masa cooked zoni soup, nimono, and sweet black beans. We also bought some fish cakes and kinako to eat with rice cakes. We had some friends over to celebrate the New Year with us. We toasted to the New Year with a small glass of sake! Cheers to 2013!
